Patients with loss of peripheral vision have significant issues with mobility, safety and loss of independence. Their quality of life is reduced and significant anxieties related to falls with injury and loss of independence are experienced. These patients can now improve their peripheral vision with the new Reverse Politzer Spectacle Telescope (RPST).

Many innovations in the field of low vision rehabilitation have provided patients with optical aids that meet their need for independence, reading, driving and mobility. Unfortunately, none of these advances have addressed the issues faced by patients with Retinitis Pigmentosa, specifically loss of peripheral (side) vision.

 OPTICS

Peripheral vision is increased when the patient uses the telescope with a reverse orientation. The patient looks through the objective lens (larger lens) rather than the eyepiece lens (smaller lens). By using the telescope in this reverse orientation, the visual field is expanded by two to three times while the objects viewed through the telescope are reduced in size by only 10%.

 DESIGN

What makes the RPST special is that the telescope is miniaturized and mounted in a pair of eyeglasses. The patient’s prescription is incorporated into the bottom portion of the lens and the telescope (with or without prescription) is incorporated into the top portion of the lens. This orientation allows the patient to use the aid for driving and mobility purposes.

The fitting is easy and all patients receive a comprehensive training program which is designed to teach the patient how to use the aid for driving and mobility purposes.

Metal frames with adjustable pads are chosen to allow for the lens system to be properly aligned and focused for enhanced ease of use.

The RPST is fast becoming an integral part of low vision therapy for patients with Retinitis Pigmentosa. Patients are using the telescopic system with great success. They continue to find new and innovative uses for this aid and do not object to the issues of size, weight or appearance. The major issue of cost has been resolved with the use of flexible funding sources that provide interest-free financing to qualified patients.
